MCCA is proud to announce the opening of their newest location in Kent – Trinity Glen Women’s Program – a long-term residential treatment facility for women who are suffering from chronic addiction.

Nestled in the hills of Kent, Trinity Glen Women’s Program provides a rehabilitative program for woman dealing with chronic addiction to drugs or alcohol. The 11-bed facility is modeled after Trinity Glen in Sharon, a successful inpatient program aimed at enhancing the client’s sense of responsibility as well as the importance of the client’s role in the community.

Trinity Glen Women’s Program is a structured, sober community living experience with an emphasis on helping clients to successfully transition into sober living after treatment. Prior to opening Trinity Glen Women’s Program, men and women were treated at Trinity Glen in Sharon. The new women’s facility in Kent will afford clients to recover in a gender specific environment. “It’s very exciting to offer gender specific treatment,” said Caroline Carlson, a clinical supervisor at MCCA’s Trinity Glen in Sharon for 20 years. “The best opportunity to change a person’s life is when you target their needs.”

The program is typically six months to a year, however discharge is based on individual circumstances. “We are pleased to be able to extend the same high level of services to clients in this new location,” said Joe Sullivan, President and CEO of MCCA. “MCCA is generally recognized as one of the highest quality substance abuse treatment providers in the state; we constantly rate at the top in terms of customer satisfaction in multiple categories.”

MCCA’s CEO and President, Joe Sullivan contributes his expertise on drug abuse for Ridgefield Press article on prescription drugs:

According to Joe Sullivan, president and CEO of Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism (MCCA) there are five major reasons why people try drugs — financial burdens, relationships ending, academic performance, unemployment, and behavioral characteristics. However, there isn’t a list long enough to explain all drug users’ thought processes.

For prescription drugs, specifically synthetic opiates, it starts with an over-prescription from an injury, he said. The addiction to them is not age-biased, he said, although he sees people in their early 20s as the largest group of admitted patients in his residential treatment facility.

“Approximately 50% of the people admitted in here for prescription drug abuse are in their early 20s,” Mr. Sullivan said.

Around 10 to 15% of his patients are late teens and the remainder are patients ranging from their mid-to-late 20s into their 40s.

“Everyone has their own story to tell” as to why they got addicted, he said. “The circumstances vary from person to person.

“This part of the state has among the highest rates of substance abuse in the country and that’s including alcohol abuse, marijuana and methamphetamines. Underage drinking and pot smoking is always the starting point. It leads down a very dark road that is difficult to navigate out of.”

Danbury, CT- April 15,2013 MCCA (Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism), Stand Together Make a Difference (Danbury’s local substance abuse prevention coalition), and Danbury Police Department in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are partnering to sponsor a prescription drug take back day on Sat. April 27, 2013.

This will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications. Bring your medications to the Danbury Police Department, 375 Main St. Danbury, CT from 10:00am-2pm for safe disposal.

In September 2012, Danbury sponsored a drug take back day and received approximately 84.4lbs of prescription drugs. Multiply that times the many communities across the state that are involved with the program and that’s a lot of drugs out of the reach of our youth. Since 1990, prescription drug overdose rates have tripled. This includes both accidental and intentional deaths.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that remain in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-
flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash- both pose potential safety and health hazards.
To inquire, please contact Terry Budlong, Director of Prevention Services at the MCCA, tbudlong@mccaonline.com or LT John Browne at the Police Department, j.browne@danbury-ct.gov

MCCA is pleased to announce that they are in the process of opening up four new addiction treatment facilities in the state of Connecticut.

Three of the new facilities will offer outpatient treatment for substance abuse, co-occurring disorders and problem gambling; the fourth, The Trinity Glen Women’s Program, is a residential facility for women.

The outpatient facilities, located in Torrington, New Haven and Derby, will offer assessments and group and individual counseling on an outpatient basis. They are the result of MCCA’s recent contract with CSSD (Court Support Services Division) of the Judicial Division of Connecticut. *

These treatment facilities will be open to anyone who is seeking help for substance abuse, co-occurring disorders or problem gambling. The Torrington facility is licensed and operational.

Sullivan is particularly pleased about establishing a presence in New Haven and said, “We welcome the opportunity to foster the relationship MCCA has established with Yale and the Clinical Trials Network.” MCCA has been participating in clinical studies with Yale for the past seven years.

Nestled in the hills of Kent, Trinity Glen Women’s Program will provide a rehabilitative program for woman suffering from chronic alcoholism. A therapeutic, structured, sober community living experience, this 11-bed facility will be modeled after Trinity Glen in Sharon, a successful inpatient program aimed at enhancing the client’s sense of responsibility as well as the importance of the client’s role in the community.

Joe Sullivan, President and CEO of MCCA stated, “We are pleased to be able to extend the same high level of services to clients in these new locations.” Adding that, “MCCA is generally recognized as one of the highest quality substance abuse treatment providers in the state; we constantly rate at the top in terms of customer satisfaction in multiple categories.”

Please check our Web site for details on locations and opening dates.

The average age that a teen starts drinking in Danbury is 13, according to surveys that students fill out themselves. And drinking early can cause long-term damage.

That’s because while the adolescent brain is still forming, alcohol can damage or kill neurons. Parents and teens need to understand the medical risks of drinking at this age. So the Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism; Danbury’s local substance abuse coalition, Stand Together Make a Difference; and Danbury middle schools have planned programs for parents and teens in the coming weeks about underage drinking.

A Ridgefield dad recently shared his experience of his son’s path to heroin addiction with the Ridgefield Press. This parent found MCCA’s How To Cope program to be a great resource in helping him to face the truth and gain coping skills. He is encouraging other parents to open their eyes to what is going on with their kids. This is his story.

An addict’s father’s tale: ‘I just didn’t see this’

By Macklin K. Reid, February 19, The Ridgefield Press

“There’s kids dying in this town,” the Ridgefield father said. “I wish the kids would come out and say something. I understand that they don’t, but I wish they would.”

His son, a 2012 Ridgefield High School graduate, became addicted to oxycodone, a prescription painkiller sold under the name OxyContin.

When he said kids in Ridgefield are dying, he was speaking of deaths from addictions to and overdoses of drugs, including prescription medications and even heroin.

“Yes, in this town,” he said. “I know two that have died.”

He spoke to The Press in December out of concern that parents don’t grasp the pervasiveness of the problem — as he himself hadn’t.

He felt a lot of people think, Aw, they’re just kids, and added, “I have to admit I was probably that way once, too.”

“I didn’t know that he’d get into OxyContin, and heroin. They’re into heroin, some of these kids.

“When we were kids, we drank, we dabbled in marijuana, but we never went over that edge. These kids, they take these pills like they’re candy and they don’t realize what they’re doing to themselves.”
